About this book

Ibn Battutah left his home in Tangier in 1325 to perform hajj and ended up travelling for almost thirty years, across North Africa, the Middle East, East Africa, Central Asia, India, Southeast Asia and China. He also spent time in the Maldives, where he served as a qadi.

This abridged edition, edited by Tim Mackintosh-Smith, presents the most memorable parts of his account — the cities, rulers, scholars and customs he encountered, his adventures and misfortunes — in a lively modern translation with helpful notes.

It is one of the greatest travel books ever written and a vivid picture of the fourteenth-century Muslim world.
